Synopsis
<a href="/name/nm0036155/">Stefan Arndt</a>'s drama focuses on three very different brothers, all searching for happiness. Hans-Jörg is a sex addicted librarian, who is interested in young students. Werner is a successful politician with a dysfunctional family. Agnes, a transsexual, works as a table dancer in a nightclub. The three brothers just have one thing in common: their longing for a happy life...
Review
The last film that touched me so profoundly was "Der Untergang", also a
German movie, after many years of stupid comedies the German movie
found back it's way to the quality of Fassbinder's movies.
The story reveals a portrait of the German society today, seen on 3
brothers. Hans-Jörg (Moritz Bleibtreu) works in a library, is a
sex-addict, watches porn-movies and masturbates on toilets peeping
women. Werner (Herbert Knaup) is a successful politician, with a big
house, a chauffeur, a beautiful garden, a wife and two children, the
dream of German society. But his wife (Katja Riemann) is disgusted by
him, as is his oldest son (Tom Schilling) and both treat him like dirt.
And then there is Agnes (Martin Weiss), who is transsexual, has a very
supportive ex-wife and a son. She is the only one who seems to be at
ease with her life, the only one who has all her senses within this mad
family.
The only link between the three is their father (in fact the only time
we see the three together is when they are visiting their father),
otherwise they lead lives very far away from each other. There is great
emotional distance between the characters, very few have relationships
who seem to be tender and real.
The movie leaves much unsaid: Did the father abuse his children? There
is definitely something wrong, all three of them have some unspoken
business with their father. When he eventually is killed we still don't
know what had happened. But then the truth (something many people claim
to know) is always different for each individual.
Agnes is not only presented as the sole voice of reason, there is also
never a question when or why or how she had changed her sex (or finally
found her true sex), it is an accepted fact within this family. While
other directors would have taken this topic to make it the main
storyline, here it's no topic at all.
Director Oskar Roehler in fact never judges his characters, they are
what they are, he investigates their lives to a point where it starts
to be painful and you are sometimes ashamed for them.
There is not enough praise for the actors, they all create people with
remarkable depth. I mostly enjoyed Katja Riemann (who won the Volpi Cup
for her moving performance in "Rosenstrasse") as the cold and
frustrated wife, her scenes with Herbert Knaup are some of the best in
the whole movie.
I do hope there will be more German movies who break clichés and show
us the madness of life!
