It has been a year since the isolated Alaskan town of Barrow's population was decimated by vampires during its annual month long sunset. Riddled with grief over the death of her husband Eben, bound by nightmares and void of all emotions beyond hate and sorrow, Stella Oleson has spent the past months traveling the world, trying to convince others that vampires exist. Met with skepticism and laughter, she is ready to throw in the towel when a group of lost souls offers an incredible opportunity: the chance to exact revenge upon Lilith, the vampire queen responsible for the assault on her sleepy Alaskan town. With nothing remaining to live for, and nothing left to fear, Stella joins their mission and ventures into the uncharted underbelly of Los Angeles where she pushes herself to the most extreme limits to stop the evil from striking again.
Review
Stella (Kiele Sanchez replacing Melissa George from the original) is
been traveling around the world. She is trying to make believe other
people that Vampires truly exists. She meets three mysterious strangers
(Rhys Coiro, Doira Baird and Harold Perrineau), who been hunting
vampires for years with the help of an vampire (Ben Cotton) turned
good. The Vampire Killers are searching for Lilith (Mia Kirshner), who
is been killing or turning people to vampires in Los Angeles with the
help of her vampire gang. Since Lilith is an Vampire Queen, she is
planning to go to Alaska, where it turns dark for 30 days at a time.
Now Stella and her new found friends are trying to stop Stella before
she travels to Alaska with her gang.
Directed by Ben Ketai made an decent, well acted sequel to the
original. Although the sequel succeed more as an action film than an
horror thriller. Although there is one horrific sequence, where an
human being proves his loyalty to Lilith by biting and killing an
victim by drinking the victim's blood is the highlight of the sequel.
"30 Days of Night:Dark Days" does have some good ideals. Sanchez does
her best in the role but she made me miss George more as Stella in the
original. Kirshner is certainly well cast in her underwritten role.
DVD has an sharp anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1) transfer and an strong
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. DVD includes an filmmakers commentary
track, an featurette and previews. "30 Days of Night:Dark Days" is
certainly one of the better direct to videos in awhile. Die-hard fans
of the Graphic Novels series might enjoy this one more. Despite some
real story flaws with an limited budget (Although well produced), it is
certainly worth a look. Written by Steve Niles (One of the creators of
the Graphic Novels series) and the director:Ketai. Look for Katharine
Isabelle in a bit part. (*** 1/2 out of *****).
